Introduction

Following CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™ application to the Yeoman Bridge decks and hatch covers the next vessel to be approached was the oldest of the Yeoman fleet, the Yeoman Bank. Steel condition on the decks and hatch covers of this vessel prior to application was of a particularly poor standard, with vast areas of paint failure, steel exposure and badly corroded areas causing problems requiring many areas of steel renewal inserts during dry docking. The long term encapsulation solution that Vessgard EXT™ provides would be the ideal one time solution to protect the repaired steel specification for the rest of the ship's life, and ensure long term aesthetic appeal that gives a very clear impression that the owner is serious about protecting and maintaining the vessel.

As a further development it was decided by the owner that the lift belt tower housing was also suffering from serious corrosion problems and after the success of the Yeoman Bridge application they chose to approach the refurbishment of this structure with Vessgard EXT™ protection.

The significance of this for Vessgard EXT™ establishment was that we were now developing our scope of vessel application for the product to other areas of ship protection. Decks and hatch cover refurbishment had already been proven as a success, but with the lift belt tower project added to the dry dock specification we were now going to show that Vessgard EXT™ can be applied to any external marine structure.

After project completion, vessel in service showing impressive results. The upgraded steel protection and long term aesthetic appeal is clear to see, and this will last for the remaining years of the vessel's service life.

Extending the life of older vessels is a proven benefit of the original Vessgard™ product for bulk carrier cargo holds, now with Vessgard EXT™ we are demonstrating the same potential for the long term protection of vessel decks, hatch covers and other external structures.

Vessel in Service - One Year Performance Survey @ Portbury, Bristol, UK.

Following the impressive results of the first year's service life performance on the Yeoman Bridge, the Yeoman Bank was visited in November 2011 whilst unloading gypsum at Portbury in Bristol, UK.

The second Vessgard EXT™ application was found to be demonstrating the same potential for longevity of service as the first application, with the advanced impact protection levels and impressive aesthetic finish clearly there to stay. We are now firmly establishing Vessgard EXT™ and its advanced chemical technology and application as the latest long term solution CAPPS® has to offer.

Now we are building our case studies of performance for Vessgard EXT™ we are establishing considerable interest from new clients in the bulk carrier market and also other vessel types including oil and chemical tankers, LNG carriers and offshore applications. There are a number of project enquiries open for new applications which will see the growth of this new advanced technology we have to offer for exterior marine surfaces and structures.

The next survey taken of the Yeoman Bank demonstrates the same performance as the first application on board the Yeoman Bridge, with clear performance longevity being indicated by the survey results. The resistance to the levels of exposure the system is exposed to during service is made clear by the performance so far and the decision made by the owners to invest in the 100% blasting and encapsulation of the decks, hatch covers and lift belt tower with CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™ is proving to deliver the results they were looking for.

The Yeoman Bank reached the age of 30 years old during 2012 and the owners wish to maximise her remaining service life. Company targets for service life of the Yeoman vessel fleet is 40 years, as the ships and granite quarry in Glensanda, Scotland are all owned together as part of the overall operation. Maximum service life of the vessels is therefore a top priority to realise full profit potential, so extending the life of the vessels as they reach the higher age range is an important priority as part of the decisions being made as part of their maintenance.

Investment in the CAPPS® long term solutions with Vessgard™ and Vessgard EXT™ on this vessel is delivering those maintenance targets and providing the long term protection required to ensure that the vessel will reach its full service life potential. Once all of the steel renewals on deck were carried out in dry dock in 2010 the Vessgard EXT™ system encapsulated the repaired steel specification and will ensure that no steel renewals will be required again for the remainder of the ships life.

This important achievement for the owner will provide considerable cost savings and reduce the threat of lost service time that compulsory steel renewals presents. Also, at this vessel age poor steel condition can ultimately force the decision to scrap a ship if the level of steel repair requirement becomes too great. Our long term performance will therefore assist the Yeoman Bank with avoiding this situation. 

Specific inspections of the vessel by Class for general overall condition of the ship as an older vessel have been favourable to the owners, as it is clear to any surveyors that investment is being made in the right places to extend the vessel's life to its full target potential. 





Structural integrity of the coating film has been well maintained with the important combination of adhesion, cohesion and elongation providing the long term protective performance properties. Our trade mark advanced high adhesion of the Vessgard EXT™ system ensures that corrosion under creep is impossible at any points of impact damage from supplies loading on deck. Any areas of impact damage on deck will stay 100% localised and can be repaired easily with our Vessgard EXT™ manually applied repair kits.

The cohesive strength of the product assists with the overall resistance to in service impact and the elongation flexibility in the cured film means that the product will move with the steel as the forces of sagging and bowing are exerted.

This ultimate combination of technical properties gives Vessgard EXT™ its long term performance capabilities and we are proving this in service in the same way we proved the original Vessgard™ product in the cargo holds. The other important aspect of the Vessgard EXT™ formulation is its aesthetic properties with the sheen in the cured film, provided by its advanced polyurethane technology and its method of application through the CAPPS® Multi - Mix Taskmaster Specialist Application Machine System. Gloss retention in the cured film is of a high standard and can be seen in these survey photographs, long term aesthetic appeal was an important aspect of Vessgard EXT™ when we began developing the product.

We are proving in service that the CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™ system will provide both the technical in service properties and aesthetic appeal longevity that we set out to establish and this will assist with our promotion of this new system to all new vessel owners for ship repair projects, vessel new buildings and our new area of Offshore applications.




As with the Yeoman Bridge application Case Study, the complete CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™ system on the Yeoman Bank holds the same appearance as at time of application, demonstrating the clear potential for the long term protection targets that we have set out to achieve.
